What changed in Amazon search, 2025–2026
A dated, sourced changelog of the changes that make older Amazon SEO content wrong. This is the page to check before acting on any article whose publish date you cannot see.
Between June 2025 and August 2026, Amazon changed product titles, review pooling, Featured Offer eligibility, promotional fee structures, its AI shopping assistant and its advertising placements. Individually each is manageable. Together they mean that a competent Amazon SEO article written in early 2026 now contains multiple instructions that will actively harm you.
Search and listings
- 27 Jul 2026Titles capped at 75 characters Including spaces, in all categories except Media, replacing the old 200-character and category-specific limits. A new Item Highlights field carries up to 125 additional characters for materials, use cases and comparison information. Amazon generates AI title recommendations, and brand owners get a 14-day window to approve, modify or reject. Rollout is gradual through 2026 and listings stay active during it. Invalidates: every keyword-stuffed title template ever written.
- 29–30 Jul 2026Item Name and Item Highlights are both search inputs Amazon stated that the two fields are “both inputs for search” with neither prioritised over the other, alongside a note that 984 million-plus titles had already been updated. This is one of the only explicit field-weighting statements Amazon has published in years. Note: Amazon published no ranking weights and no field-by-field comparison — claims that the two fields are perfectly interchangeable are unverified.
- 10 Aug 2026Item Highlights begins displaying in search results Shown next to the title in search results and on detail pages, which changes SERP appearance and therefore click-through dynamics. Invalidates: any CTR benchmark or title A/B test result from before this date.
- 13 May 2026Rufus replaced by Alexa for Shopping Powered by Alexa+, voice and touch enabled across mobile, desktop and Echo Show, adding product comparison, price history, price-drop alerts, auto-buy at a target price and a “Buy for Me” capability that shops beyond Amazon. US only at launch. Invalidates: every “optimise for Rufus” guide, at minimum by name. Whether it is a rebrand or a replacement is disputed.
- Jul 2026Featured Offer seller-eligibility requirements removed Amazon: “Starting in July 2026, we'll begin removing seller eligibility requirements for the Featured Offer,” rolling out globally and completing by the end of 2026. Selection continues on competitive pricing, delivery speed and performance metrics. Invalidates: every Buy Box eligibility checklist.
- 21 Jul 2026Variation Wizard retired Replaced by Add Products. Invalidates: tooling walkthroughs and variation setup screenshots.
Catalogue and reviews
- 12 Feb – 31 May 2026Review sharing across variations ended for functional differences Reviews still pool for minor, non-functional differences: colour, pattern, same-function size, pack quantity, secondary scent, device fitment and platform compatibility (a case for two different phones, same design), cosmetic updates. Reviews now split for different performance specifications, models or generations, formula or ingredient changes, materials, bundle-versus-standalone, primary flavour or scent, and function-affecting fit. Rolled out category by category with 30 days' notice; reviews were reallocated, not deleted. Deliberate improper grouping is treated as catalogue abuse. Invalidates: the entire “add children to inherit the parent's reviews” playbook — following it now creates enforcement risk rather than growth.
- 8 Dec 2025 – 31 Mar 2026Commingling ended Resellers must apply Amazon barcodes. Invalidates: inventory operations content.
- 22 Jul 2026AI-generated people require synthetic-performer tagging Images and video containing AI-generated people require IPTC
contains-synthetic-performertagging, with customer-facing indicators shown. New: a compliance surface that did not previously exist for AI creative.
Advertising
- 10 Aug 2026Sponsored Products auto-enrolled into creator placements Campaigns began serving inside Amazon Influencer creator content across the US, CA, MX, BR, IN, MENA/Turkey and selected EU markets. Existing campaigns were auto-enrolled at current bids and budgets; controls are limited to a campaign-level reach toggle plus creator exclusions. Reporting substitutes Amazon-inferred search terms for actual shopper queries. Invalidates: search-term data continuity across this date, which matters for any keyword-level rank analysis.
- 11 Nov 2025Sponsored Brands reserve share of voice Fixed upfront pricing to secure top-of-search on branded keywords. Amazon's pilot data showed top-of-search impression share moving from 62.7% to 99.3%. New: a paid path to SERP dominance that did not previously exist.
- 11 Nov 2025Unified Campaign Manager and agentic ad tooling Console and DSP merged, plus Ads Agent, Creative Agent and full-funnel campaigns. Invalidates: console UI walkthroughs and workflow guidance.
- 14 Apr 2026Associates commissions cut by up to 50% Across several categories, with on-site attribution narrowed so commissions apply only to the promoted ASIN or its variants — removing the catalogue bonus publishers relied on. Effect: thins the creator and review-site layer that has historically fed external traffic to listings.
Fees and economics
- 2 Jun 2025Coupon and deal fees became percentage-based Coupons moved from a flat $0.60 per redemption to $5 per coupon created plus 2.5% of coupon-based sales. Lightning and Best Deals moved from tiered $150–$1,000 event pricing to $70 per day plus 1% of deal revenue, capped at $2,000. Inverts: the ASP logic of promotional strategy — percentage fees now penalise high-ASP coupon use and favour low-ASP.
- 15 Jan / 2 Apr 20262026 FBA fee schedule and fuel surcharge Roughly $0.08 per unit average increase, plus a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on FBA fulfilment fees, around $0.17 per unit in the US. Invalidates: unit-economics models built on 2025 numbers.
Regulatory
- 21 Oct 2024FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule takes effect 16 CFR Part 465. Prohibits creating, selling or buying fake reviews; incentives conditioned on review sentiment; undisclosed insider testimonials; review suppression through threats or unfounded legal claims; and fake social-media indicators of influence.
- 22 Dec 2025FTC sends first warning letters under the rule Ten companies, with the Commission noting civil penalties of up to $53,088 per violation that “can quickly add up.” Effect: review and rank manipulation now carries federal exposure independent of anything Amazon does. This is the layer that pre-2025 grey-hat content does not account for.
- Jul 2025 – Feb 2026Amazon escalates litigation against review brokers Including domain transfers for 75-plus fraudulent websites in July 2025, a joint action with the Better Business Bureau in October 2025, and a February 2026 suit reported to detail broker pricing schedules. Amazon reports targeting 32,000 bad actors in 2025.
Reported but not verified
Premium A+ opened to all Brand Registered sellers (around 18–21 May 2026). Trade press reports that Amazon removed the $5M sales minimum, invite-only access and multi-submission qualification, making Premium A+ free by default. We could not locate an Amazon primary source. Check your own Seller Central before planning around it.
Listing Quality Dashboard driving organic rank (July 2026). An “Attribute Completeness Score” is reported, with field data suggesting ASINs below 65% dropped an average of 4.2 organic positions in 21 days, plus a new “Buy Box suppressed — listing quality” status in regulated categories below 60%. No Amazon statement; single-source field data. Directionally consistent with Amazon’s published line that listing quality can contribute to rankings, but the numbers are not established.
Keeping up with this is a job
Most of these changes arrived with little notice and no migration path. ZBD Growth tracks them across a portfolio of accounts because it has to. If you would rather not, that is what an agency is for.
